Getting There: A Beautiful 3-Hour Drive

On May 4th, I took a 3-hour drive from Stellenbosch, Cape Town to the peaceful coastal town of Hermanus. The drive itself is part of the adventure, winding through mountain passes and revealing glimpses of the ocean. Whether you’re driving alone or with friends, the journey is one to remember.

Where I Stayed: Hermanus Beach Club

I booked a night at Hermanus Beach Club, a laid-back resort right by the water. The highlight? Waking up to the sound of the waves and stepping out to see natural rock formations right at the edge of the property.

The rocky shoreline here creates a unique setting — perfect for photos and peaceful walks. The sea breeze and panoramic views made it feel like a true escape.

  • If you’re looking for budget-friendly oceanfront accommodation in Hermanus, Hermanus Beach Club is a solid choice.

Things you will see:

Day Two: Exploring Hermanus Town

The next day, I drove into the heart of Hermanus Town — a charming seaside village known for its walkability, friendly locals, and most famously, whale watching.

One of my first stops was the Whale Museum. Right outside, I found this beautiful sign introducing the Southern Right Whales that migrate to these shores during winter. The museum explains everything from their breeding cycles to spotting tips. It’s a must for nature lovers!

Things to See in Town (Walking Tour Style)

ou can easily tour the town on foot, and that’s exactly what I did. Here’s what I came across:

The Whale House Museum

Hermanus Whale House

Great for learning about the ocean giants that have made Hermanus a global whale-watching destination.

Rossouw Modern Art Gallery

A small but vibrant space featuring contemporary South African artists.

De Wet’s Huis Photo Museum

This spot offers a deep dive into Hermanus’ history through vintage photography — a gem for history lovers.

Fisherman’s Cottage Restaurant

Whether you want fresh seafood or traditional South African dishes, this place serves it up in a cozy seaside setting.

Whale Watching in Hermanus

Whale Watching in Hermanus

Hermanus is often ranked among the top whale-watching spots in the world. Between June and November, Southern Right Whales migrate to Walker Bay to calve and nurse their young — often just meters from shore!

Even though my visit was in May (before peak season), I still found the town buzzing with whale excitement, and I can imagine how special it must be to see them breach from the Cliff Path during winter.

Hermanus Cliff Path

Tip: For the best views, try the Hermanus Cliff Path or book a guided boat trip.

The Hermanus Cliff Path: A Photographer’s Dream

While walking through town, I couldn’t resist strolling a portion of the Hermanus Cliff Path — a 12km coastal walkway that offers unmatched ocean views. Along the way, there are benches to sit, signs to read, and lookout points where whales are often spotted in season.

The path is well-maintained, peaceful, and perfect for travelers of all ages. If you’re creating content — blog posts, vlogs, or Instagram Reels — this spot is gold.

Local Food & Shopping

Hermanus is not just about scenery — it’s also home to local craft markets, boutique stores, and cozy eateries.

  • I explored sidewalk stalls selling handmade crafts and African souvenirs.
  • Tried out local seafood (the grilled hake was amazing).
  • Enjoyed a cup of coffee from a beachfront café while watching locals and tourists enjoy the sunshine.

Tips for Content Creators and Bloggers

If you’re a travel vlogger or blogger, Hermanus gives you:

  • Natural light for photography.
  • Coastal soundscapes perfect for YouTube walk tours.
  • Landmarks and signs in both English and isiXhosa/Afrikaans for local flavor.

Bring your camera, drone, or GoPro — and don’t forget a wide-angle lens for those cliff path views.

My Final Thoughts on Hermanus

My quick trip to Hermanus was short, but it left a long-lasting impression. Whether you’re traveling for nature, ocean views, whale spotting, or local charm, Hermanus delivers.

I’ll definitely be back — next time during peak whale season.
