What is the best way to explore Stellenbosch?
Stellenbosch is one of South Africa’s most famous towns, known for its history, wine farms, and vibrant student life. But many first-time visitors ask: “Can you actually walk around Stellenbosch?” The answer is yes — Stellenbosch is walkable, and you can explore car dealerships, museums, restaurants, and even transport hubs all on foot.
In this blog, I’ll take you on the exact walking route I did in Stellenbosch — showing you where to find everything from the fire department to the train station. This guide will help you if you’re visiting for the first time and don’t know where to find amenities, landmarks, and hidden gems in Stellenbosch.
Starting Point: Papegaairand Road

My walk began at the Stellenbosch Fire Department on Papegaairand Road. This is where you’ll also find the Suzuki dealership, followed closely by NMI Toyota, and Mercedes-Benz Stellenbosch on the corner of R310 and R304, and the Lexus showroom. For car lovers, this part of town is a good starting point.

If you’re looking for student or professional accommodation, Hofman Road is full of residential apartments. This road connects directly to Merriman Avenue, home to ACVV Stellenbosch, the Rolbal Bowls Club, and the Bergzicht Taxi Rank.
💡 Tip: There’s even some free parking near the taxi rank, which is a rare find in Stellenbosch.

Du Toit Street & Van der Stel Sports
From Merriman Avenue, I connected to Du Toit Street. Here you’ll find the Cape Winelands District Municipality, while opposite stands the Van der Stel Tennis Club.
Walking a bit further, you pass Mediclinic Corporate Offices, the Stellenbosch Police Station, and the Van der Stel Sports Grounds at Bergzicht Street. This area is well-connected for both administrative and sporting activities.

Alexander Street: Car Dealerships & Museums
On Alexander Street, you can’t miss the Land Rover and Jaguar dealerships at number 43. A short distance away is the Bergerhuis Museum at the corner of Alexander Street and Blom Road — a great spot for history lovers.

Continuing down Blom Road, you’ll find The Power House, the Toy & Miniature Museum, and the Stellenbosch Heritage Foundation. These attractions showcase Stellenbosch’s cultural and historical roots.
