Have you ever wondered where billionaires live in Cape Town? On my recent 4K walk tour, I visited Bakoven, a small, exclusive coastal suburb tucked just after Camps Bay. In this blog, I share the experience of my journey, the scenic route I took from Stellenbosch, and whether Bakoven is truly as safe and luxurious as they say.
What Is Bakoven and Where Is It Located?
Bakoven is one of the wealthiest and safest suburbs in South Africa. It’s built along the Atlantic Seaboard, just after Camps Bay, on the famous Victoria Road that runs all the way to Hout Bay. While it’s often overshadowed by its bigger neighbor Camps Bay, Bakoven is more private, serene, and discreet—making it a preferred location for wealthy residents and international billionaires.
My Journey: From Stellenbosch to Bakoven
The trip began in Stellenbosch, a town well-known for its wine farms and university life. I took the R304, which connects Stellenbosch to the N1 highway. From the N1, I connected to the M62 (Kloof Nek Road), a famous scenic route into Cape Town.
This road offers incredible views of:
- Signal Hill
- Table Mountain
- The Atlantic Ocean
As I ascended along M62 and passed Lion’s Head and Table Mountain, I descended into Camps Bay, one of Cape Town’s most visited beach areas. I parked inside the Promenade Mall in Camps Bay and began my walking vlog from there.
Walking Along Victoria Road Toward Bakoven
From Promenade Mall, I started walking along Victoria Road, heading toward Hout Bay. The goal was to capture the beauty, lifestyle, and safety of Bakoven for anyone curious to visit or move there.
What I noticed:
- Clean streets
- Luxury houses facing the ocean
- People jogging and walking with their dogs
- A peaceful, welcoming atmosphere
This area felt very safe. There was no sign of danger or discomfort, and everyone I passed seemed relaxed and enjoying the surroundings.
Is Bakoven Safe for Walking?
Yes, based on my experience walking with a camera, Bakoven is very safe. I passed:
- Joggers
- Walkers
- Locals out enjoying the coastal air
There was no intimidation or unsafe feeling. It is definitely one of the few places where you can comfortably walk with a camera and feel completely secure.
Why You Should Visit or Walk Around Bakoven
Bakoven is not only rich in property value but also in beauty. It’s:
- Less crowded than Camps Bay
- Close to popular attractions
- Offers ocean views and a peaceful environment
If you’re looking for safe places to explore in Cape Town, Bakoven should be on your list—especially for slow travel, walk tours, photography, or just appreciating coastal luxury living.
Why Do Billionaires Live in Bakoven?
This is one of the most expensive and private residential areas in the entire country. Here’s why:
- Discreet Location: Unlike Clifton or Camps Bay, Bakoven is quieter and less known to tourists.
- Security: CCTV cameras, security patrols, and gated mansions make it ultra-safe.
- Views: Panoramic ocean and mountain views right from your balcony.
- Exclusive Beaches: Bakoven Beach and Beta Beach are small, less crowded, and feel like private slices of paradise.
Many South African and international business elites call Bakoven home — some with net worths in the millions or even billions of rands.
What to See in Bakoven

- Beta Beach: A quiet beach popular with locals and yoga lovers.
- Bakoven Beach: Smaller but with fewer crowds.
- Architectural Homes: Take in the modern glass designs and Mediterranean-style mansions.
- Table Mountain & Twelve Apostles Views: The road wraps around cliffs offering world-class photo ops.
- Victoria Road Coastal Drive: One of the most scenic drives in Africa — ideal for video creators, photographers, and vloggers.

It’s clean, calm, and feels like a world of its own — no crowds, no noise, just beauty.
